################################################################################# ### README: Information about the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project ######### ### Phase 5 (CMIP5) from the World Climate Research Programme (WCRP) ############ ### and the datasets prepared for OGGM ######################################### ################################################################################# The folder cmip5-ng contains netCDF files of 10 GCMs and up to four RCPs from 1850 until 2100 from WCRP CMIP5 intercomparison project (https://pcmdi.llnl.gov/mips/cmip5/ ; Taylor et al., 2012) in the framework of CliC GlacierMIP project (http://www.climate-cryosphere.org/activities/ targeted/glaciermip/activities-experiments). Additional GCMs that go until 2300 (downloaded from Copernicus Climate Change Service, Climate Data Store, (2018) using CMIP5 monthly data on single levels, DOI: 10.24381/cds.9d44a987) were added later into subfolders. ################################################################################## ########################### FILE NAME INFORMATION ################################ List of the 10 GCMs from 1850 until 2100 used for the GlacierMIP project: - MPI-ESM-LR - GFDL-CM3 - CanESM2 - NorESM1-M - GISS-E2-R - CCSM4 - CNRM-CM5 - IPSL-CM5A-LR - GFDL-ESM2G - CSIRO-Mk3-6-0 -> These GCMs are bilinearly interpolated to a 2.5° grid. They are in the folders "pr/" and "tas/". List of the 6 GCMs that go until 2300 and were lated added from Copernicus: - MPI-ESM-LR - CanESM2 - NorESM1-M - CCSM4 - CSIRO-Mk3-6-0 - CESM1-CAM5 -> These GCMs have a regular grid (only option in Copernicus Climate Change Service). They are in the folders "pr/2300/" or in "tas/2300/". -> Note that CESM1-CAM5 is the only new GCM which is not available on a bilinearly interpolated on a 2.5° grid until 2100. All other GCMs exist once until 2100 with the 2.5° grid, and once in their regular grid until 2300. Overview of available GCMs and corresponding Scenarios: - 1850-2100: https://cluster.klima.uni-bremen.de/~oggm/cmip5-ng/gcm_table_2100.html - 1850-2300: https://cluster.klima.uni-bremen.de/~oggm/cmip5-ng/gcm_table_2300.html List of the variables: - pr for precipitation - tas for temperature Name of the GCM files going until 2100: (with 2.5°-bilinear interpolation: 'g025') 'variable_mon_'gcm'_'scenario'_'realization'_g025.nc Name of the GCM files going until 2300: (with regulat grid) 'variable_mon_'gcm'_'scenario'_'realization'.nc . variable is 'pr' or 'tas' . mon is for monthly . gcm is one of the GCMs available . scenario is one of 'rcp26', 'rcp45', 'rcp60', 'rcp85'. Most GCMs also have the 'historicalGHG' or 'historicalNat' scenarios that go until 2005. . realization is here always: 'r1i1p1' Example filepath: tas/tas_mon_CanESM2_rcp26_r1i1p1_g025.nc (until 2100) pr/2300/pr_mon_CESM1-CAM5_rcp85_r1i1p1.nc (until 2300) "all_gcm_list.csv" lists all files and filepaths within pr/ and tas/ If you only want to use/download all GCMs and scenarios: - until 2100: use this table with the filepaths, GCM, scenario and additional information: "all_gcm_list_2100.csv" https://cluster.klima.uni-bremen.de/~oggm/cmip5-ng/all_gcm_table_2100.html - until 2300: use this table with the filepaths, GCM, scenario and additional information: "all_gcm_list_2300.csv" https://cluster.klima.uni-bremen.de/~oggm/cmip5-ng/all_gcm_table_2300.html ################################# DATA USE ################################# These data have been downloaded and formatted by: - Urs Beyerle (IAC/ETH Zurich) - Rebecca Chizzola (UIBK) - Lilian Schuster (UIBK) - Fabien Maussion (UIBK) Please acknowledge the CMIP5 project (https://pcmdi.llnl.gov/mips/cmip5/citation.html), and cite the following reference (https://doi.org/10.1175/BAMS-D-11-00094.1).
